FW Food Menu – Documentation

Ingredients

FW Food Menu tutorial for WordPress

The FWFM Ingredients addon adds a structured ingredient list to each meal item, with the ability to tag individual ingredients with allergens from a centralized list. Guests can see exactly what a dish contains and which allergens are present, directly on the meal detail page.

Use Cases

  • Allergen transparency — highlight the 14 major allergens (gluten, nuts, dairy, and others) on each meal so guests with dietary restrictions can order safely.
  • Ingredient display — list all ingredients of a dish in a readable format on the meal detail page.
  • Legal compliance — many jurisdictions require allergen information to be displayed on food menus.

Managing Allergens

Once the addon is active, an Allergens section appears in the FW Food Menu admin menu. Go to FW Food Menu → Allergens to build your master allergen list before assigning allergens to ingredients. Each allergen must be created here first.

Each allergen record includes the following fields:

  • Name — the allergen label displayed to guests (e.g. "Gluten", "Peanuts", "Dairy").
  • Icon — an optional image uploaded for visual display alongside the allergen name.
  • Status — set to Published or Unpublished to control visibility.

Adding Ingredients to a Meal Item

When the addon is active, an Ingredients field appears on the meal edit form. Enter each ingredient as a free-text entry and link it to one or more allergens from your master list. Each ingredient can carry multiple allergen tags.

Frontend Display

On the meal detail page, the ingredient list appears below the meal description. Allergens are shown alongside their icons or text labels, depending on the active template. Allergen icons may also appear as a compact badge strip on listing cards, depending on the template in use.

Multilingual Support

When the Multilingual addon is also active, ingredient entries and allergen names can be translated per language, allowing guests to view allergen information in their preferred language.

Notes

  • Allergens must be created in FW Food Menu → Allergens before they can be assigned to any ingredient.
  • Allergen icons are displayed using uploaded image files or text labels, depending on which template is active.
  • Ingredient data is stored as structured records linked to the meal item, not as plain text.

To install this addon, open the Add-ons panel inside FW Food Menu. See Getting Started → Add-ons for details on free addons, paid addons, and site verification.
