Tab Categories Layout
The Tab Categories Layout addon replaces the default menu layout with a tab-strip navigation. Each top-level category becomes a tab; clicking a tab reveals its items instantly using JavaScript — no page reload required. The first tab is active by default when the page loads.
Use Cases
- Compact navigation — menus with four to eight categories benefit from a tab strip that keeps all categories visible at once while swapping items inline.
- QR-code digital menus — the client-side tab switching delivers a fast, single-page feel suited to mobile diners scanning a code at the table.
Enabling the Layout
Once the addon is installed and enabled in the Joomla Plugin Manager, go to FW Food Menu → Settings → General → Theme and select Tab Categories as the active layout. You can also override the layout per menu item through the Joomla menu item parameters.
Settings
The following options appear under Settings → General when the Tab Categories layout is active.

Category-Level Overrides
Individual categories can override the global tab settings. Open the category editor and look for the Design tab to adjust tab behaviour for that category specifically.
Compatibility Notes
- Works alongside the Text Menu design template plugin for a minimal, typography-focused appearance.
- Only one alternative navigation layout should be active at a time. Do not use Tab Categories simultaneously with the Cascading layout plugin.
